Overview

The knee is the largest and one of the most frequently used joint in the body.  It is easy to take for granted how much we depend on normal knee function to perform our daily and routine activities.  The knee is comprised of a complex system of ligaments, cartilage and bone that all work together in perfect harmony. However, disease or injury to any one component can disrupt this harmony, resulting in pain and reduced function.

If your knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, you may be suffering from pain even if you are sitting or lying down.  It may also be difficult for you to perform everyday actitivities such as walking or climbing stairs.  The most common cause of intense knee pain is arthritis which can take its form as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic arthritis.

Some of the most common reasons for a complete knee replacement include:

•Severe knee pain that limits your everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs
•Moderate or severe knee pain while resting (day or night)
•Chronic knee inflammation and swelling that does not improve with rest or medications
•Knee deformity (bowing in or out of your knee)
•Knee stiffness (inability to bend and straighten your knee)
•Failure to obtain pain relief from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
•Failure of other treatments to alieviate pain such as cortisone injections, physical therapy, or other surgeries

The first knee replacement was performed in 1968 and since this time, advances in materials and techniques have greatly advanced its benefits.   More than 90% of individuals who have a complete knee replacement experience a dramatic reduction of knee pain and a significant improvement in the ability to perform common activities of daily life.
